Possible Reasons Why We're Not Making Contact

If a picture can tell a thousand words, then we have made contact.  But casting aside the mountains of photographic, video and radar evidence that currently exist, why haven't the extraterrestrials (assuming they exist) held a press conference?   

• Chain of Command:  Perhaps they have already contacted key world leaders and are respecting their wishes to suppress the contact information until those leaders decide that the public needs to know.
• We're Too Primitive: Perhaps they have a "prime directive" such as the one often mentioned in the Star Trek programs and movies where contact with a new race is avoided until that race is capable of traveling outside their own system.
• They Do Not Want To Trigger Worldwide Violence: Imagine the impact on religious and social beliefs that would happen if we were to learn that we are not the only ones in the universe to be created in God's own image. This and other equally challenging ideas could so quickly undermine our own sense of self that we could become vulnerable to our most dangerous instincts and thereby cause ourselves great harm.

In the absence of a full disclosure, this list of possible reasons why extraterrestrials (assuming they exist) have not already held a press conference is pure conjecture. Furthermore, we will never move past the level of conjecture until we are willing to support a formal congressional hearing into the matter.   

But there is one possible reason why the extraterrestrials (assuming they exist) have not contacted us, and it goes back to a childhood memory of this author.  

Our Self-Destructive Urges

When I was a young tike, I had a fascination with blue flames emanating from the stovetop burners on my mother's gas stove.  While she was preparing a meal, I would often try to touch the flame and my mother would push or slap my hand aside.  Being stubborn, I kept on trying until one day my mother decided that I was finally going to have my way. 

She sat a one-pound block of butter on a plate next to the stove and waited for it to get nice and soft before calling me into the kitchen.  When I entered, I saw a high flame and of course moved to experience its wavy blue light.  This time, my mother just watched and in quick order I let go with a tile-cracking scream.  Before my scream was halfway out of my mouth, my mother grabbed my hand and plunged it deep into the butter. 

In time, I came to realize a few important lessons.  First, what I had done was self-destructive and I had nobody else to blame for it. Second, I learned that I had intentionally ignored my mother's many warnings.  Third, I learned that my mother was a little wiser about the world than I, and that if I wanted to avoid similarly painful experiences elsewhere that it would profit me well to listen carefully to her loving advice.

Perhaps the same thing is happening here.  As a species, we are ignoring the dangers that are very real, such as the threat of asteroid impacts and Earth changes.  Meanwhile, we are progressing technically and building weapons of mass destruction that increasingly taunt us with the very real possibility of self-destruction.  

It could be that the extraterrestrials (assuming they exist) have already told our world leaders to look up from the road ahead, and to see what is happening 8 car lengths in front of us, are stepping back from the stove to see if we will ignore our own harbingers and stick our hands in the flame.  The problem there is that a simple pound of butter will not salve those grievous wounds. However, those of us who do survive will be more likely to listen. 

We Need To Move Beyond Entertainment

Normally, the task of demanding a full disclosure as this would fall upon the shoulders of the fifth estate. But our media is no longer serves the role of public guardian in the traditional sense.  Hard news has become entertainment news, and investigative reporting has largely been replaced by one news media personality interviewing another news media personality. 

There was a time when the news media in this country looked 8 car lengths ahead, but now, they only see the distance between their hastily prepared, sound-byte edited news story and the next commercial break. 

In time, the mainstream news media will suffer its own comeuppance for having betrayed its sacred watchdog role. But that will be another day, and another time.  In the meantime, the issue falls on the shoulders of each and every American. With this in mind, we all need to take the long view of a vitally important issue and to seek the truth wherever it may lead us.

Yes, we know that many argue that sufficient circumstantial evidence already exists to definitively state that we have been and are in contact with extraterrestrials.  However, that is not what the CSETI Disclosure participants/harbingers are asking of us.  Rather, all they ask is that we put their evidence on trial before the Congress, and then let the chips fall where they may.  Why is this so unreasonable? 

We are faced with a tremendous opportunity, because a group of brave individuals are willing to take great risks in order to make their knowledge of public record in a congressional hearing.  

We Americans seldom ask our elected representatives for acts of bravery but this is one time we must, because what is at stake here could very well be our own cherished form of government if not our very lives.  The time has come for each and every one of us to ask our Senators and Representatives in the Congress to schedule extraterrestrial disclosure hearings at once.
