The Russians are hardly remembered for being the first into space.  All the glory is given to the Americans for landing men on the Moon. Likewise, nobody will care to remember who got to Mars first.  However all of humanity will remember who changed our understanding of life forever, by finding it on Mars.

2003 Missions Will Go to Mars with Christmas Spirit

Two years from now, Mars will be receiving Christmas gifts from Earth — a whole fleet of spacecraft.

The first will arrive just before Christmas 2003: the European Space Agency's Mars Express and its lander, Beagle 2.  The New Year will bring with it the Japanese ISAS's Nozomi and NASA's two Rovers. These will join NASA's Mars Odyssey, which arrived on Mars last October and will still be operating.

By the beginning of 2004, Mars will have six visitors — three landers and three orbiters.

Even the customary taunting before the big race has begun.  It was started by the ESA who has a head start and will be landing on Mars first.

Battle of the Martian Landers

The scientist behind Europe's lander mission to Mars has launched an extraordinary attack on the American space agency, Nasa, and its plans to return to the Red Planet.

He claimed Europe's static lander, named Beagle 2, would achieve far more than Nasa's so-called Athena package and at a fraction of the cost.

"I'm swapping sightseeing by Athena for science on Beagle 2," Professor Pillinger told the British Association's Festival of Science.

The race is well and truly on with both Nasa and the European Space Agency, Esa, using a favorable Mars-Earth alignment in 2003 to launch missions to the Red Planet.

Let There Be Life

Given the abundance and persistence of life, at an absolute minimum we must expect to find tiny organisms such as extremophiles on Mars.  Given that the latest discoveries seem to have caught NASA off guard, it is quite likely that life exists where NASA only sees dirt.

We now know that temperatures on Mars are rising, and as the ice defrosts, so too could forms of life that we have never seen before.  This life may be lying dormant within the vast quantities of water that now appears to exist at the poles.  We have shown possible forms of life at the South Pole in previous articles.  The fact that we have not found such examples at the North Pole could now be explained by the accidental discovery of the polar vortex reducing the atmospheric density, allowing solar radiation to attack life in this region.  The remnant magnetosphere at the South Pole also increases the favorable conditions for life to flourish there. 

We are now so close to proving that life in both large and small forms exists on Mars, that all it will take is one small step for mankind to realize that we are most definitely not alone.
